" Instead I am left feeling betrayed by WD - they have forced this "Smartware" onto people whether they want it or not then make them jump through hoops to 'hide' it. I just wanted a standard portable drive where I could use ALL of the space without any hassles. "And yet another disappointed customer here. What's more annoying is that I have yet to see any responses to concerns presented in these forums from Western Digital." The option should be ours on whether we want to use the software or not. This is further compounded by having to install three different drivers. Even though you hide the VCD, it shows up again on every new PC that you plug the drive into. I know there is a patch out so you can hide the VCD but, this is unacceptable. Nothing says that this process may take an unecessary amount of time. Nothing says that you will have to path out to the driver folder on the hard drive to install all the drivers that windows needs to load. Nothing says that a virtual CD will be loaded everytime you plug in the drive. I found it very misleading that nothing on the packaging states that a portion of your drive is taken up by a hidden partition that cannot be removed. I use to be very loyal to Western Digital as I've always found their products very reliable and cost effective. "Add me to the ever growing list of dissatisfied customers. There is no way to remove it from the disk." source "The Virtual CD manager only disables the VCD image. ![]() ![]() Two of the answers might prove helpful: one mentions TestDisk which I can recommend as well, and the other a LiveCD with a lot of recovering and testing tools ( Hiren's Boot CD).Beegmouse, Mattios, are you guys users of WD My passport? It does not seems so easy to remove their bloatware, there are many people complaining in the forums, it seems like not just a format and delete files will do. This way you can find out what it really is.Īlso, if it worked out, you can copy all data to another drive, and re-format the partition using a file system supported by Windows - if that drive should be used there.ĮDIT: You also might want to take a look at one of the "related" questions: My Western Digital 500GB Passport disk says “not formatted” when I plug it in Windows. This should list up all mounted partitions and, amongst other information, also the filesystem used. If that worked out, open a command line and issue the mount command. Chances are good it will recognize and mount the partition in question. Linux knows a lot more file systems than Windows supports, and its auto-detection works pretty well. My recommendation would be: Download yourself a Linux LiveCD, burn it, and boot from it (or use another Linux system if you already have one available), and then connect the drive to that computer. Could it be the drive was formatted using a different OS, say e.g. the file system used is unknown to WindowsĪs you speak of data you don't want to lose, I rather assume the latter. No file system is shown for that primary partition - while for the other disk they are clearly displayed.
